Woodwork Classes

Make Your Own Marking Gauge

This gauge is largely made with hand tools. The only power tool we will use is a drill press. It locks with a transverse wedge and incorporates a friction mechanism (not visible) for smooth adjustment. Like all well made gauges it can be half locked then fine adjusted by tapping the ends of the beam on the bench. It has provision for a pencil at one end and a cutter at the other. The cutter, hand shaped from hardened silver steel, is locked with a set screw and is reversible (bevel toward the fence/away from the fence).
